Ideas and Concepts:
From the famous intellectual salon department via tonight's Understanding Einstein course: "In 1901, before Einstein was able to land a secure job as a patent clerk in Bern, Switzerland, he put an ad in the newspaper offering his tutoring services in mathematics and physics. Two men by the name of Conrad Habicht and Maurice Solovine answered his ad, and while neither tutorials nor payment ever materialized, the three began to meet regularly to discuss their shared interest in physics and philosophy, and in 1902 named themselves the Akademie Olympia. The three discussed their own work and read other works such as Karl Pearson's The Grammar of Science, Ernst Mach's Analyse der Empfindungen, Henri Poincaré's Wissenschaft und Hypothese, John Stuart Mill's A System of Logic, David Hume's Treatise of Human Nature, Baruch Spinoza's Ethics, and literary works such as Cervantes' Don Quixote. Despite the brief existence of the Academy, it had a lasting effect on the three friends, and they remained in touch throughout their lives."
