Install Ubuntu 7.04 in VMWare on Windows XP and connect it to your network This tutorial shows you how to download a trial version of VMware, download a free Ubuntu image, install it on your VMWare, then download and install the free VMware Player and connect your virtual Ubuntu Linux in your network so that you always have a Linux machine in your network at your disposal, great if you are learning Linux. Register for your free 30-day evaluation license link.  ozonecombine: please tell me why i must install this  | Edward: Because with the free vmware player you can't install machines, only USE machines that have been created elsewhere. I have seen hacks which allow you to bypass this however, but they are hacks and might cause other problems, I've never tried them. Another alternative is to use the free virtualization software
virtual box. I actually got Ubuntu installed on it via iso but it was strangely slow and also didn't automatically link my Windows machine over the network. |
| ray: you could just use easyvmx.com to create a virtual machine and use that in conjunction with vmplayer to install ubuntu. No need to install and use the workstation trial that way. |
Nick: a bit off topic i know but why cant i install ubuntu on a Virtual PC. really peeee's me off.
although im now running 7.04 now on an old Dell laptop | Edward: I just assumed you COULD install ubuntu on Virtual PC. I remember when Microsoft bought Connectix and turned it into Virtual PC you could still install Linux on it although Microsoft didn't support this anymore. Did you try to install Ubuntu on Virtual PC and it didn't work? |
| Sid: Well i did try installing ubuntu 6.04 on Virtual PC 2007 but it gave me garbled graphics so couldnt see the installation(since it defaults to 24 bits which is unsupported on VPC). Then i read somewhere that i needed to grab the "alternative iso". By then Fiesty fawn was out so i got "ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386". The installation started fine in text mode and it detected my hardware fine. But at a point all the virtual HDD and CD activity ceased...and i've done this 3 times now. It seems to get stuck at arbitrary points. Not sure what the problem is??? So will give VMware a try |
| Joe: Ubuntu 6.04 installs on Microsoft Virual PC just fine, but you have to drop the color density for it to install without messing up the graphics.
Ubuntu 7.04 (and many other latest distros) have a kernal issue that prevents VPC from detecting the mouse from inside VPC. |
| Atul: I have installed ububtu 7.04 on Vertual PC but I am not able do anything with mouse so need to use keyboard.
any resolution help for the same ?
p.s. : in order to install ubuntu on VertualPC 2007
1. create the vmc
2. attach the physical CDROM (make sure you have ubuntu cdrom in it :-) )
3. Start vmc -> will boot from CD
4. from the ubuntu-menu -> select the Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode
5. once ubuntu started - now you can see the ubuntu desktop without any graphics problem with two shortcuts on desktop a.examples and b.install.
6. no matter what you do: can not get mouse or keyboarding working for ubuntu
--solution->
a. send ctrl+alt+del signal from vertual pc menu
b. press right arrow key (->) on keyboard
c. tap it till you are on select "cancel" button
d. once you are on cancel button hit "Enter" on keyboard
e. again press right arrow key (->) : now the example shortcut is highlighted. tap it one more time and you are on the install shortcut and hit enter and complete the installation procedure. |
