The Temple of Venus and Roma

Hadrian
born in 76 AD
emperor at age 41 after serving together with Trajan for a number of years
born in Spain, like Trajan
one of the most educated and most intellectual of the Roman emperors
traveled extensively
reversed Trajan's policy
Trajan involved in many wars and extended empire beyond its reaches
Hadrian was more of a peaceful emperor
concerned with consolidating the empire
built the Hadrian Wall in Britain
was a philhellene
first emperor with beard
word toga in public but himation in private
was called "the Greekling"
also in his architecture
may have designed himself
was an amateur architect
may have designed Temple of Venus and Roma
Venus: goddess of Roman family
special favorite of Julius Caesar and Augustus
in this way is conjuring up his connections to early leaders of the republic and empire
Roma: goddess of the city of Rome
121 AD began construction
135 AD inaugurated by Hadrian
141 AD finished by Antoninus Pius
307 AD damaged by fire
two plans may have been the case
we think that Maxentius who rebuild it kept to the original plan
main features are the same
features are different from typical Roman temple
two cellas back to back, one for each god
because Hadrian was a Philhellene

Flavians chose to build their buildings here to replace what Nero had done there
